Ahh, the good old days, when the Clippers were the young(ish) and exciting team in Los Angeles. Blake Griffin still dunked a lot, Matt Barnes hadn't had his ex-wife sleep with Derek Fisher, DeAndre Jordan hadn't agreed then disagreed to sign with the Mavericks, and the owner was still a racist. And no Austin Rivers. You may call it the best of times for the Clippers franchise. So needless to say, we were pretty dang excited for this game, and it did not disappoint.
You may at this point be wondering why I called this trip Tixmas (or more likely than not, you don't care at all). But I'll explain regardless! Stubhub was doing some sort of giveaway that they called Tixmas- you had to do something and you had a chance to win tickets to different games, concerts, etc. I had obviously already bought all the tickets for this trip and it's not like any of the stuff they were giving away was for anywhere near Montana, so I didn't really participate in that much, but I liked the phrase, so a trip hashtag was born! And with all the red at the Clippers game, what better place to spend some Tixmas time!

Just as there is a first game and stadium, there was a first major sports trip. It was the winter after I had graduated from college, and I was getting the travel itch/wanted to get Joel something really great for his birthday. Joel is a big Raiders fan, so what better gift than a game! My original thought was to take him to a game in Denver, but apparently he'd been to Mile High with his dad and didn't have a great experience... Fortunately, I had a friend working in San Diego, so the Raiders game there right before Christmas caught my eye! Soon, my obsessive planner self turned that one game into 5 (plus some other fun stuff) and we had our very first "sports trip!" We flew in to Los Angeles on Thursday and had our first game the next day.
The Seats I must admit, this was the game we were least excited for on our trip, so it was probably good we went to it first. As a sorta Celtics fan at the time, there was certainly no love in my heart for the Lakers. They weren't very good at the time, and they were playing the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves. Our seats weren't great- this was really just a warm up for the other games. Regardless of our lukewarm feelings, however, there is no excuse for us not getting a picture together at this game. We were young and timid, and at the Celtics game we had friends there with us to take pictures. This is where Stadium Chaser rule #3 came from- we don't have a picture of the two of us from this game! But I did get a few pictures out front, as well as one of the scoreboard, which should give you a general idea of how high up we were. That was my favorite moment of the game though- they did this thing where you could text in a message and it would go across the scoreboard, so Joel surprised me by sending in this! Every story starts somewhere, and ours started officially the summer before my senior year of college. I was home for the summer in our hometown, and Joel asked me out on a date a whole 2 weeks before I had to head back to school on the East coast for the start of volleyball season. Despite the short time together, we decided to do the long distance thing, and the rest is history! We made it through the first half of the year relying primarily on Skype and phone calls, but during the second semester, Joel came out to visit me for Valentine's day! Since I was so close to Boston, we agreed to meet there for a weekend in the city, starting with a Celtics game. They were playing Chicago, which just so happened to be Joel's favorite team. At the time, I fancied Rajon Rondo, so we did the ever adorable "split couple" ensembles and were on our way!
