 Sunday Night with the Sox! The Sunday game, and last game of our trip, was a Sunday night game with an 8:00 start time. Since we had a long day to fill, this day was our catch-all day- we went to Central Park, saw Times Square during the day time, and went to the Bronx Zoo. All that was fun, but what Joel and I were really looking forward to was the game- we had seen the Sox win 5 games in a row and were going for the trip sweep with David Price on the mound!

Whenever we’re at a game and we see people leaving early, we judge them. Hard. I know they’re skipping out to beat traffic, which can absolutely suck after major sporting events, but the bigger the event, the more expensive the tickets are, and you’re willingly cutting short your time in the seats your paid for? I understand a little bit if it’s a blowout, but Joel and I see it in games that are tied (or close) with less than five minutes left. Why are you even there? The only people that get a free pass are people with kids on school nights. That’s it. Everyone else, you’re the worst. With all that being said, we were potentially in a situation where I had to break our “Don’t Leave the Game Until It’s Over” rule for game 2 in the New York. The game was at 4:00 and we also had tickets to the Broadway musical “Wicked” that night at 8:30. It was a quick hop and a skip on the subway to Times Square for the show, and baseball games usually take about 3 hours. However, the Red Sox- Yankees series is widely known for its slow pace of play and having game durations above the four hour mark. The girls were certainly not going to be happy if we were late to the musical, and Joel would not be pleased if we had to leave the game early. What was going to happen?   I’d been to New York City in the fall (and by New York City I mean the inside of Columbia’s gym), New York City in the winter (again, inside of Columbia’s gym), and had the chance to actually explore the city my senior spring in college, but even that was fairly strictly supervised by a guy we knew who worked there after college. So this was my first time planning a trip there, first time there in the summer, and the first visit for Joel and the girls. As such, we naturally got off to arguably the worst start possible. It all started with taking the afternoon bus- the college had two buses going to NYC each day, with one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The girls finished up camp mid-morning, so we stuck around campus for a while and hopped on around 2:00. When I’d taken the morning bus before, we’d made it to the city in about 5 hours. Unfortunately, the afternoon bus got us there in terrible traffic, turning the last few miles into a 2 hour trip and making the trip in all about six and a half hours. We were going to be rushed for our dinner reservations at Ninja, a restaurant where there are literally ninjas performing around you while you eat, but I thought we could still make it there in time. We hopped in an Uber and started to our AirBnB.
