Usually, when I’m planning a sports trip, it starts with a game. This one, however, started with a camp. For those who don’t know, I coach volleyball and played volleyball for an awesome coach at Dartmouth College. I wanted to take my youngest sister out there for a camp (she never got to visit me while I was out there) and bring along some other players, including her friend who was a setter at the time. My former coach was a setter herself and great at teaching it, so I was excited for her to show my players (and hopefully me) some stuff on setter/overall player development. Additionally, the Red Sox played in Boston the weekend before the camp and in New York the weekend after, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to hit up both cities while getting some volleyball in in between. Unfortunately for us (but not for the coach) she got a job offer at another school that she ended up taking after I had already planned the trip. We ended up still going, however, and while the camp wasn’t exactly what I’d envisioned and we had a few hiccups along the way, the trip was amazing.

The Red Sox have had this horrible habit the last couple of years of following up an awesome run-scoring performance with a really terrible one. I am a firm believer in the whole law of averages thing, so anytime I see a 10+ run game I know there are going to be some poor scoring games to balance it out, but the Red Sox are impressive in consistently balancing it out the game immediately following it. At this point, however, I was still naïve and optimistic, so I had good feelings going into the third game.
If you read my last post, you might be wondering who the young boy in the pictures with us is. His name is Jake, and he’s my boss/friend Derek’s son. When I was originally planning the trip, Derek and Jake were going to come too, but Derek had some stuff pop up for work, and so we offered to take Jake so he didn’t miss out. He’s a Red Sox fan who spent several years growing up in Minnesota- he had to go! Jake was a little wary of us at first I think, but eventually warmed up, especially on Friday night. It had been a long day and him and Joel were a little slap happy I think, so they had a grand old time getting settled in at Melissa’s and eating chicken strips.
The fun continued the next day- Saturday’s game was an afternoon game, and they were geared up for another day of baseball! |
