Looking back, both of the NFL stadiums we visited on this trip were doomed, but at least this one was planned. The 49ers were upgrading and moving their stadium, and honestly, it was definitely time. Candlestick was dated, especially for the always changing San Francisco area, and the part of town it was in didn't exactly scream safety. But unlike Qualcomm, there was so much great history there. Jerry Rice had caught touchdowns there. Joe Montana and Steve Young had taken snaps there. The 49ers had so many wins within those bleachers, and while they had a span where winning seasons were only memories, Jim Harbaugh had lead a rebuild and they were finally good again. Candlestick deserved a proper send off, and it was an honor to be a part of it. It was a perfect last game at Candlestick, last Monday Night Football game of the season, and last game of our trip!

Ahh, Qualcomm, we hardly knew thee. Ok, maybe Qualcomm was well known- the stadium was certainly old and dilapidated, so I imagine at some point the Chargers had fans there. I had been to plenty of sporting events without Joel, but this was my first ever NFL game, and to be honest, it was a didn't exactly live up to the bill. But a day watching a game live is never a day wasted, especially when you're in sunny San Diego while your family freezes in the tundra of Montana, so I shouldn't complain too much!
Ahh, the good old days, when the Clippers were the young(ish) and exciting team in Los Angeles. Blake Griffin still dunked a lot, Matt Barnes hadn't had his ex-wife sleep with Derek Fisher, DeAndre Jordan hadn't agreed then disagreed to sign with the Mavericks, and the owner was still a racist. And no Austin Rivers. You may call it the best of times for the Clippers franchise. So needless to say, we were pretty dang excited for this game, and it did not disappoint.
You may at this point be wondering why I called this trip Tixmas (or more likely than not, you don't care at all). But I'll explain regardless! Stubhub was doing some sort of giveaway that they called Tixmas- you had to do something and you had a chance to win tickets to different games, concerts, etc. I had obviously already bought all the tickets for this trip and it's not like any of the stuff they were giving away was for anywhere near Montana, so I didn't really participate in that much, but I liked the phrase, so a trip hashtag was born! And with all the red at the Clippers game, what better place to spend some Tixmas time! |
